The Women's Parliamentary Caucus (WPC) of the National Assembly of Pakistan has held a two-day workshop on ‘Advancing Gender Equality in Legislation: A Workshop on Gender-Sensitive Legislative Drafting’ from 14 to 15 December 2024 in Islamabad.
The Workshop was held under the leadership of the Pakistan Women’s Parliamentary Caucus Secretary, Hon. The International Chairperson of the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians (CWP) network, Hon. Dr Zainab Gimba, MP (Nigeria) attended the Workshop and highlighted the CWP’s work in helping Parliaments to become gender-sensitive institutions and to encourage all Members to include a gender perspective in all aspects of their role - legislation, oversight and representation.
The CWP Chairperson underscored the need to review and evaluate the best regional and international practices for incorporating Gender-Sensitive Legislation into existing legislative frameworks and to learn from each other's experiences and legislative drafting skills. She also recognised the women Parliamentarians from the Federal and Provincial Assemblies of Pakistan for their contributions towards promoting gender-sensitive legislation and furthering gender equality in the country.
The two day Workshop featured experts from the Pakistan Institute for Parliamentary Services (PIPS) and civil society organisations on topics such as gender-sensitive legislative drafting, running a successful women’s parliamentary caucus, harassment in the workplace and anti-acid throwing laws, and increased representation of women in law enforcement.
